About Jasper's Glove Repair
My name is Mark Jones. I’m retired after more than 21 years of IT work with the State of Oregon, and now I’m combining my lifelong love of baseball with a passion for restoring and repairing baseball and softball gloves. Whether you want to bring new life to an old favorite, add some color to your laces, or break in a new glove for a child or grandchild, I’d love to help.
I still have my own glove from high school - a faithful companion since the spring of 1973, my sophomore year. I cared for it over the years, and it served me well through my school years and 22 years of competitive men’s slow-pitch softball.
Who’s Jasper?
Jasper was my father’s nickname, given to him by his parents back when he was a boy in the early 1920s. My dad, Jesse Jones Jr., taught Social Studies and Math at Walker and Whiteaker (then called Junior High Schools) from the mid-1960s until his retirement in 1988. He also coached baseball and football. He taught me the game from a young age. While most kids watched Saturday morning cartoons, I was watching Mickey Mantle and the Yankees play on TV (they were on a lot back then!). I named my service Jasper’s to honor him and the countless young people he inspired over the years.
How I Got Started
My cousin Tom, who lives in Tigard, has repaired or restored more than 3,500 gloves over the past decade+, and built an incredible clientele. His encouragement and support were a big part of what inspired me to start Jasper’s Glove Repair.
A Lifetime in Baseball
I grew up in Keizer and played baseball from the age of six through my sophomore year in college. My playing years included:
Three years at Whiteaker Middle School
Three years of varsity baseball at McNary High School and the local American Legion team (1973–1975)
College ball at Treasure Valley Community College and briefly at OCE (now Western Oregon Univ.)
Injuries eventually ended my playing days, but baseball never left my life. At 19, I was fortunate to serve as assistant coach for the Salem Babe Ruth 13-year-old All-Stars, who won the state championship that year. Later, I spent many seasons coaching teams from t-ball through high school while continuing to play competitive softball myself.
