About Jasper's Glove Repair
and Contact
Hello! My name is Mark Jones. I have been a life-long resident of Keizer, Oregon. Now that I’m retired, I’m combining my lifelong love of baseball with a passion for restoring and repairing baseball and softball gloves. Whether you want to bring new life to an old favorite, add some color to your laces, or break in a new glove for a child or grandchild, I’d love to help.
I still have my own glove from high school - a faithful companion since the spring of 1973, my sophomore year. I cared for it over the years, and it served me well through my school years and 22 years of competitive men’s slow-pitch softball.
Who’s Jasper?
Jasper was my father’s nickname, given to him by his parents back when he was a boy in the early 1920s. My dad, Jesse Jones Jr., taught Social Studies and Math at Walker and Whiteaker Junior High Schools from the mid-1960s until his retirement in 1988. He also coached baseball and football. He taught me the game from a young age. While most kids watched Saturday morning cartoons, Dad and I were watching Mickey Mantle and the Yankees play on TV. I named my service Jasper’s to honor him and the countless young people he inspired and coached over the years, both in the classroom and out on the field.
How I Got Started
I have dabbled fixing my friend's gloves since high school - that was 50 year ago! My father was also a horse owner for a short time and he learned how to relace much of his own leather in his tack. He showed a few tricks in those early days and some of my friends knew I had fixed my own glove, so they would hit me up if a lace broke. My late cousin Tom, owner of All-Star Glove Repair in the Portland area repaired or restored more than 3,800 gloves over the past 11+ years, and built an incredible clientele. For the past 18 months, Tom encouraged and supported me to start my own business. I wanted to be able to assist Tom and his customers, but he passed recently and we missed that chance to setup that collaboration. Tom inspired me to start Jasper’s Glove Repair and I am planning on treating my customers as Tom treated his.
A Lifetime in Baseball
I grew up in Keizer and played baseball from the age of six through my sophomore year in college. My formative playing years included:
Three years at Whiteaker Middle School
Three years of varsity baseball at McNary High School and the local American Legion team (1973–1975)
College ball at Treasure Valley Community College
I played and fall baseball at OCE (now Western Oregon Univ.) but a bad ankle injury eventually ended my college playing days, but baseball never left my life. At 19, I was fortunate to serve as co-coach for the local Babe Ruth 13-year-old All-Stars, who won the state championship that summer. Later, I spent many seasons coaching teams from t-ball through high school while continuing to play competitive softball in the evenings But enough about me!.
